About the museum
Östergötlands järnvägsmuseum is located at Valla gård in Linköping and is today part of the open-air museum Gamla Linköping. Here the railway history of Östergötland is gathered, from narrow-gauge vehicles with track gauges of 891 and 600 millimetres to a drawing collection from ASJ. In addition there is a large collection of models of famous steam locomotives from around the world.
The museum was built up by Järnvägarnas Museiförening i Linköping (Linköping Railway Museum Association), which was formed in 1961. The association was dissolved following a decision at its annual meeting on 2 April 2022, and since then the museum has been run by Gamla Linköping. The entire collection is on deposit from Sveriges järnvägsmuseum in Gävle.
Visitors can see a large steam locomotive and several different kinds of railway carriages, get an idea of what travelling by train used to be like, and try sitting in some of the carriages. The collection also includes “Ankan” (The Duck), Sweden’s first alternating-current locomotive, which got its name from its swaying gait.
