About the museum
Östra Södermanlands Järnväg is run by the museum association Museiföreningen Östra Södermanlands Järnväg (ÖSlJ), a non-profit association that collects and preserves locomotives and carriages from the country’s smallest railways, those with only 600 mm track gauge, and shows them in operation. Seven railways with that gauge were used for public passenger and freight traffic in Sweden, built between 1891 and 1909, and most were closed as early as the 1930s. Many locomotives and carriages were then sold to industrial lines, which kept them in operation into the 1960s, and it is from there that ÖSlJ has built up its historic vehicle fleet.
Today the association owns almost twenty different locomotives and nearly as many passenger carriages, in addition to many freight wagons, and has vehicles from all seven 600 mm lines that carried passengers. The aim is to show a living narrow-gauge light railway as it could look in the first decades of the 20th century, and to show that such small railways were an important means of transport for the local community.
The trains run from Mariefred to Läggesta Nedre and on certain days further to Taxinge-Näsby, most weekends from May to September and often also on weekdays in summer. In Mariefred are the association’s workshops, engine shed and carriage halls, as well as the Jernvägscaféet (Railway Café). Of the association’s about 1,000 members, around a hundred are active in operations, and operations are supervised by Transportstyrelsen (the Swedish Transport Agency).
