About the museum
Callanderska gården is located at Klostergatan 5 in the centre of Mariefred and is a dyer's farm from the 1700s. The main building was erected in the 1740s by the glazier Slottman, and the wing building was added in the 1780s by the dyer Löfving. The farm was a dyer's farm from 1766. In 1947 it was donated to Mariefreds hembygdsförening (Mariefred Local Heritage Society) by the artist Sofia Nordvaeger, née Callander, and the society has since managed the farm and run the local history museum. The farm was declared a listed building in 2024, and in 2025 the association received the building conservation prize of Sveriges Hembygdsförbund (the Swedish Local Heritage Federation).
In the main building a town house from around 1900 is shown. In an annex is the association's weaving room, studio and workshop. In summer the farm's craft sheds can also be visited: one with tools from old crafts, one with a milk, washing, mangle and ironing shed, and a fire shed with older fire-fighting equipment.
Since 2000 an exhibition has been shown about the brush factory OLUMA, which operated in Mariefred from 1929 to 1999. Production is shown in a video film and a photo exhibition, and visitors can see samples of many of the brush qualities that were made. The farm also houses a clothing collection from the late 1800s to the 1920s, which is shown only by advance order. The farm includes an old-fashioned garden with culinary and medicinal herbs and allotment plots.
