About the museum

The Svenska statens porträttsamling (Swedish State Portrait Collection) is kept at Gripsholms slott (Gripsholm Castle) in Mariefred and is counted as the world's oldest national portrait gallery. The collection today comprises about 5,000 works, mostly oil paintings, and more than 800 of them hang in the castle. The foundation was laid in the 16th century under Gustav Vasa, who had works of art brought to his newly built castle; in 1548 there were 98 paintings there, 23 of which were portraits.

Later several galleries of contemporary princes were added, among them the Rikssalen (Hall of State) under Charles IX and the Vita Salongen (White Salon), which Gustav III had created in the 1770s and 1780s. In the second half of the 17th century the Dowager Queen Hedvig Eleonora contributed about 200 portraits, most of them of relatives. The portraits show significant people from the time of Gustav Vasa up to our own day.

Gripsholms slott was built in the 16th century at Gustav Vasa's initiative and holds four centuries of interiors and art. Well-preserved rooms from the Vasa era are here, the most famous being Hertig Karls kammare (Duke Karl's Chamber), and Gustav III's theatre is in one of the round Renaissance towers. The castle is managed by the Kungliga Hovstaterna (Royal Court), and the portrait collection is shown as part of a visit to the castle.
