About the museum
Bankeryd has been a centre of brush manufacturing in Sweden since the 1920s. Harry Isaksson started the brush factory Perfect in the village, and the business has since branched out into several companies. Today painting tools are made in Bankeryd by, among others, Flügger färg, Habo Penslar, Anza/Orkla and Wagner Pensel.
The Penselmuseet is run by Bankeryds hembygdsförening (Bankeryd Local Heritage Association) and is located in the Fattigstugan (poorhouse) at the local heritage farm, a building from 1870 that was Bankeryd’s last poorhouse. With the help of guides, the association shows how brushes were made in the past, and it also collects pictures and stories of the village’s brush industry.
The local heritage farm consists of several older buildings, including Stommastugan, which is probably Bankeryd’s oldest surviving house, a smithy that has been moved here, a grain store and a shoemaker’s workshop. The association also receives school classes, who hear stories about the farm’s buildings and the making of brushes.
