About the museum
Skärstads hembygdsförening (Skärstad Local Heritage Society) was formed in 1961 to work for cultural and environmental conservation in Skärstad and to explore and convey the history of the district. In the society's museum in Kaxholmen, objects from the area are cared for, and the society also owns the crofter's cottage Hägnen, a small farm from the early 19th century with no road access for cars.
The museum's main building was inaugurated in 1966. It was built as an engine shed (lokstall), because the narrow-gauge railway between Jönköping and Gripenberg ran past just here. The building also has a meeting hall that is used for meetings and gatherings; an extension of 70 square metres was brought into use in summer 1999.
During the summer season the museum is open on Sunday afternoons with coffee service, and the association arranges events there, among them Skärstafesta, a Christmas market, courses and lectures.
