About the museum

Prince Eugen collected art for about sixty years. His first purchase was made in Paris in 1887, and the last was bought in 1947, the same year he died. During his studies in Paris in 1887–1889 he came into contact with the generation of the Konstnärsförbundet (Swedish Artists' Association). The home at Waldemarsudde was completed in 1905, and the gallery was inaugurated in 1913.

Prince Eugen created Waldemarsudde as a total work of art, in which inside and outside belong together. The collection comprises about 7,500 works, mainly Swedish art. Painting makes up the main part, but there are also sculpture, drawings, graphic art, craft and medals. The prince bought mostly contemporary art and also supported untested artists; among the most represented are Karl Nordström, Herman Norrman and Ernst Josephson.

The park's sculptures are part of the collection, among them works by Carl Milles, Carl Eldh, Teodor Lundberg and Bror Hjorth, as well as Antoine Bourdelle's Herakles and Auguste Rodin's Tänkaren (The Thinker). After the prince's death the collection has grown slowly through gifts and purchases, and in 2016 a donation was added in memory of Märta and Runo Ahlqvist.
