About the museum
Raggagårdens mejeri (Raggagården Dairy) was built in 1929 by the dairyman Einar Broberg and worked as a combined farm and purchasing dairy. At its peak the dairy had forty suppliers, and the milk was driven there from nearby farms by horse and cart. The dairy was modern for its time, with hygienic floors and walls of tile. Einar was responsible for receiving the milk, the equipment and the sales, and his housekeeper Linnea was a trained dairymaid.
In the summer, when the cows gave more milk, maids were employed to help in the dairy. Over time competition grew from the milk co-operative (mjölkcentralen) in Götene and other dairies, and when the Second World War broke out the number of milk producers fell, so that too little milk came in. The dairy was in operation until 1940.
Today the dairy is owned and run by Holmestad local heritage society, which, with support from among others the County Administrative Board and Leader, has carefully renovated the building to keep and recreate the old. The original equipment remains, and the dairymaid’s dwelling is shown on the upper floor. Visitors can take an educational walk-round and see how cheese and butter were made.
