About the museum
Ore deposits at Ramhäll were discovered in the mid-1700s, and the mine already appears on a map from 1746. Extraction for a long time took place by hand, with manual sorting of the ore. Compressed-air drills were introduced in 1916, and electricity replaced steam power in 1919.
Extraction ceased in 1929, and until 1941 only waste rock was processed. In 1942 Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB bought the facility and modernised it, and new concrete installations were built in 1942–1946. Processing started up again in spring 1947, and all mining operations were shut down in 1975.
Today the transformer building from 1918 and the concrete installations remain, among them a hoist tower with winch, while several other buildings were demolished in the 1990s. The homestead society is housed in Ramhäll's old school from the 1880s, where there is a preserved schoolroom from the early 1900s, an exhibition with pictures and objects from the mining era, a collection of wooden sculptures from Ramhäll and a display case with old clothes.
