About the museum
Salsta slott (Salsta Castle) lies on a former peninsula in Lake Salsta at Vattholma. There has been a fortress or manor house on the site since the Middle Ages. The first known owner was Gregers Birgersson, son of Birger jarl (Earl Birger), and later Salsta was owned by the Sparre family. In 1516 Sten Sture the Younger had the medieval building burned down.
Nils Bielke d.ä. (the Elder) had a Renaissance castle built in 1613. In the 1670s Nils Bielke d.y. (the Younger) had the upper floors removed and built the French-inspired Baroque castle that stands today. The castle was inhabited until 1976, when it was sold to the state, and it has been a listed building since 1993.
The castle contains rooms from the 17th to the 20th century side by side, and some are almost untouched. The Riddarsalen, the largest hall, retains its interior from the time of Nils Bielke the Younger and Eva Horn, with portraits, a large leather wall covering and ceiling stucco by Giuseppe Marchi. Since 2020 the company Alla tiders slott och kultur has rented the castle from Statens fastighetsverk and keeps it open to visitors with guided tours and cultural programmes.
