About the museum

Knutmassomuseet is at the top of the old Kvarnen in Gimo, Östhammar Municipality, and is run by Gimo hembygdsförening (Gimo local heritage society). The association was founded in 1996, was previously part of Olands hembygdsgille (Oland local heritage guild), and has around 250 members. The building is called Kvarnen and, besides the museum, houses a café and rooms that can be rented.

The museum celebrates Knutmasso, the annual festival in Gimo held on 13 January with costume processions and imaginative constructions in Bruksgatan. The museum shows masks, costumes and Knutmasso figures from earlier years' celebrations. Depending on the day and the weather, up to ten thousand people can come to Gimo during the festival.

Kvarnen also houses Knutmassomysteriet, a playful family exhibition about the origins of Knutmasso and the history of Gimo, where children get a time-travel passport, look for stamps and make their own Knutmasso figure. The museum organises storytelling evenings with local storytellers, and guided tours of Kvarnen and its surroundings about Gimo's industrial heritage.
