About the museum
The farm at Ransäter was built in the mid-17th century and until the late 19th century was the home of the owners of some of the bar-iron hammers by the Ranån river, a short distance from the farm. From 1759 it was owned by Erik Gustaf Geijer’s grandfather. Here the historian, poet and composer Erik Gustaf Geijer was born on 12 January 1783, and here he grew up.
In 1817 the farm was sold to the ironworks owner Barthold Dahlgren, and it became the childhood home of Fredrik August Dahlgren, author of the folk comedy Värmlänningarna. The artist Uno Troili, Geijer’s nephew, also visited the farm often. Iron production in Ransäter ceased in 1883, after which the farm fell into serious disrepair.
Since 1912 the farm has been owned by the Geijerska släktföreningen (Geijer family association), which had it restored from the ground up. The main building is a museum and shows interiors from the 18th and 19th centuries, with furniture, manuscripts, paintings, books and other belongings of those who lived here. The museum is devoted primarily to Geijer but also to Dahlgren and Troili.
