About the museum
At Ås Brunn in Södra Ås, three kilometres south of Mårbacka, Lieutenant Erik Gustaf Lagerlöf, Selma Lagerlöf's father, started the spa business in 1855. The mineral spring was closed down in the 1950s, and today the site is a homestead museum with an open-air museum. Östra Ämterviks hembygdsförening (local heritage society) was founded in 1948.
The centre of the homestead museum is an 18th-century double cottage (parstuga) originally from Norsta in Fölsvik, furnished with historic furniture and household objects. The site also has an open-air theatre, a log-built pavilion, a smithy, a stolpbod (raised storehouse), and the buildings Karlsro, Brunnshagen and Brunnsrestaurangen, which are used for parties and celebrations in summer.
On the grounds there is a bank museum from Östra Emterviks Sparbank, which was founded in 1889 and closed in 1996, when its business was taken over by Fryksdalens Sparbank. The society also has an archive in Karlsro and a picture database with digitised photographs from the district. Every year in early August the Lagerlöf Festival is held, with theatre based on Selma Lagerlöf's books. Midsummer and St Lucia celebrations are also held here.
