About the museum
The Riksdagsmannagården (Member of Parliament’s Farm) in Axtorp, Förlanda parish, takes its name from Aron Christoffer Gunnarsson (1855–1944), who married into the farm in 1882 and lived there for a long life. He was first a member of the Riksdag and then a respected farmers’ leader and municipal official, and among his lasting contributions are the road improvements in the district.
The farm has roots in the 1600s, but the oldest surviving buildings date from 1836, when the whole village of Axtorp had burned down and the farm was rebuilt. The dwelling house was raised in 1905 and retains, among other things, a tiled stove in the room, the front room where Gunnarsson received visitors, and the office in the side room. Electricity was installed in the 1940s, but never water or telephone. In the north wing there is, among other things, a horse-powered drive (vandring) to a threshing machine.
The farm was declared a listed building in 1994 and is managed by Förlanda hembygdsgille (Förlanda Heritage Guild) under an agreement with the owner. Now and then the setting is brought to life through a dramatisation of the member of parliament’s life, and in summer the unaltered interior can be seen.
