About the museum
Sigtuna museum, formerly Sigtuna Fornhem, is a municipal museum at Lilla torg in Sigtuna. The museum stands on the plot where the first royal manor was built at the end of the 900s. The Sigtuna Fornhem foundation was formed in 1916, and the present museum building in red-painted wood from the 1700s was bought and inaugurated in 1923. In the 1960s the museum was extended with new exhibition rooms, a reception and storage, and since 1968 it has been run by the municipality and is open all year round.
Sigtuna is one of Sweden’s oldest towns, and the museum’s collections therefore contain many archaeological objects. Since 1985 large excavations have been carried out in the town’s medieval cultural layers, the so-called svarta jorden (black earth), under the museum’s direction. The result is one of the country’s largest collections of archaeological finds. The museum also has ethnological objects and art, and since 2016 the operation has been called Sigtuna Museum & Art, with responsibility for art in Sigtuna Municipality.
The operation also includes several cultural-historical environments in the town, among them Sigtuna Town Hall (rådhus), Lundströmska gården and Borgmästargården, as well as a climate-controlled object store that researchers can visit by appointment. The exhibition Sigtunahistorier (Sigtuna Stories) is shown at the museum and at several of the sites.
