About the museum
Gunnes gård is a reconstruction of a Viking-age farm from the early 11th century. Here the environment and life of a farm from the Late Iron Age, the period we usually call the Viking Age, are recreated. The farm lies in an area rich in ancient monuments, where animals graze on the burial mounds.
Nearby are Bronze Age cairns, Iron Age burial grounds and several rune stones. One of the rune stones says that Vibjörn had the stone raised in memory of Gunne’s daughter, his wife, and the farm has taken its name from it. Since the farm lies in an ancient-monument area, the environment cannot be rebuilt to any great extent.
On the farm there are sheep, pigs and hens, and the houses are furnished with rugs and hides. The open-air museum Vikingagården Gunnes gård is a municipal museum owned and run by Upplands Väsby municipality, and it is counted as a museum by the industry organisation Sveriges museer (Museums of Sweden). The farm has a museum shop, a fornslinga (ancient-monument trail) and an audio guide, and during the season tours, school programmes and events are arranged.
