About the museum
Fridegårds och statarmuseet in Övergran is run by Håbo hembygdsförening (local heritage society), which has been responsible for maintaining the museum and guiding visitors through it since 1974. The museum lies near Övergran church and commemorates the author Jan Fridegård, who grew up on Uppland estates and became a writer despite difficult conditions in his youth.
The exhibition depicts the working conditions of a statare family during the most intensive period of the statare system. It shows family life shortly after the First World War, in cramped and simple dwellings with few resources. Pictures, texts, statare contracts and authentic objects give an impression of everyday life, and part of the exhibition is about how hard the path was for a statare child who wanted to escape a predetermined life as a farmhand (dräng) or maid (piga).
The museum also includes part of Jan Fridegård's study from Bredmansgatan in Uppsala, where several of his books were written, and a picture series about his life and writing on the upper floor.
