About the museum
Skälsbäck School was in use from 1883 to 1958. The oldest school building was used between 1883 and 1923 and today houses the café. The school closed in 1958, and since 1968 it has been run by Norrgrändens Bygdeförening (Norrgränden Village Association), a non-profit association that looks after the school museum, the café and a hostel in the old teachers’ residences.
In the museum there are two classrooms fully furnished with school benches from a whole century, teachers’ desks, school charts, textbooks, an organ and much else. Visitors have access to audio guides and a computer, and the exhibition information is translated into English and German. There are also school photographs of pupils from Skälsbäck School, with details of years, teachers and the pupils’ names.
The association holds several recurring events, including the Veteran Days (Veterandagarna), with an exhibition of tractors, mopeds and cars on the last weekend in July, and a kroppkaka weekend (potato dumpling weekend) in early September.
