About the museum

Fröåsa handpappersbruk (Fröåsa hand paper mill) was built in 1802 by the Fröåsaströmmen on the Kråketorpsån, some half a mil (Swedish mile) outside Virserum, and became the town's first industry. In the first half of the 19th century, printing and writing paper was made from rags (lump), old clothes bought up by travelling rag dealers. Later the mill switched to coarser grades of paper. The mill was in operation until 1921.

It was then dismantled to be shown at the big exhibition in Gothenburg, which opened in 1923. Eventually the mill could be brought back to Virserum and was rebuilt in the local heritage park in 1950. Today it is the only surviving hand paper mill in Sweden, and all its machines and tools are set up in their original condition.

In summer, the hand-forming of paper is demonstrated, using the same watermark as at the beginning of the 19th century. The heritage park also contains some fifteen other buildings, among them Ruben Nelsons fotoateljé (photo studio) and Tildas stuga (Tilda's cottage).
