About the museum
Telemuseum opened in 2001 in Virserum's former furniture industry area, today called Bolagsområdet, on the initiative of Anders Joelsson. The museum closed in 2014 after the founder had passed away and the economic association behind the area had gone into liquidation.
Virserums hembygdsförening (local heritage society) saved the area and Telemuseum in 2016, and the museum was reinaugurated on 6 May 2017. It is located in the same cultural centre as Virserums möbelindustrimuseum (furniture industry museum) and Virserums konsthall (art hall).
The exhibition covers around 650 square metres and follows the development of telecommunications over roughly a hundred years, from manual telephone exchanges to satellite technology. The development of mobile phones between 1956 and 1992 has a special place, and there are also around 300 fixed telephones, period-style settings, switchboards, measuring instruments, teleprinters (fjärrskrivare), fax machines, pagers and pirate radio transmitters.
