About the museum
Skepparhuset was built in 1893 by Albert Arvidsson, who married Andriette the same year. Albert had been a sailor and then a dörje fisherman (dörjefiskare), and together with his father Olle he became a pioneer of mackerel fishing on the Doggers bankar in the North Sea. The couple had children, Artur, born 1894, and Anna, born 1898. The children never married and lived in the house all their lives. Artur fished mackerel until 1928 and afterwards worked in cargo shipping, while Anna managed the office and the home.
When Anna moved to a nursing home in 1978, she locked the house's doors with padlocks. Her last wish was for a foundation to show how a cutter skipper lived around 1900. The foundation was formed in 1987, the board took over the buildings in November the same year, and two floors of the house could be opened to visitors in summer 1988.
The home has essentially stood untouched for over a hundred years, and the front rooms on the ground floor in particular are shown in their original condition. The collections have been expanded with the nautical collections of the brothers Sune and Ingemar Johansson, which are shown mainly in the Skutmuséet. The foundation's hosts give regular guided tours in summer.
