About the museum

Vikarvet, Kulturhistoriskt Sällskap (Vikarvet Cultural History Society), was formed on 14 August 1915 on Tryggön in Askum parish in Sotenäs as Fornminnessällskapet Vikarfvet (Vikarfvet Ancient Monuments Society). The purpose was then to save ancient monuments and older buildings and to erect memorials, at a time when there were not yet county museums or state bodies for the care of ancient remains. The association is entirely non-profit, has around 300 members today and works mainly with Bohuslän's history and cultural history.

The museum Vikarvet has since 1972 had its exhibitions in a building at Turistgatan 17 in Lysekil, designed by the architect Stig H Lundgren. The exhibitions show how people on the Bohuslän coast lived in the past as fishermen, stonemasons and canning-industry workers, and shed light on Lysekil as a seaside resort. The museum also has a large collection of ship models.

The association owns several older settings: two fishermen's cottages with boathouses at Torneviken in Gullmarsfjorden, one of which was moved from Fiskebäckskil as early as 1908; the gill-net fishing boat Frifararen, built in 1890 at Orust; and Marias kvarn (Maria's mill) at Blekebacken in Lysekil, from the 1850s. The association arranges illustrated breakfasts (bildfrukostar), lectures, Vikarvets dag, Kvarnens dag and Jul på Vikarvet, and can receive guided visits by booking.
