About the museum
The boat collections on Bassholmen are run by Föreningen Allmogebåtar (the Traditional Boats Association), which was formed in Uddevalla in 1970. Restoration of the abandoned buildings on the island began in June 1976, and the museum was opened in July 1977 by the ethnologist Olof Hasslöf.
The buildings once housed a herring salting house, and in the late 19th century Jakob Johansson’s boatyard was located here. They were then used as a mechanical workshop. The island also has a slipway from 1901 with three rail tracks, which could haul up vessels of up to 300 tonnes with a water-hydraulic system powered by a hot-bulb engine of 25 horsepower.
Indoors, around thirty boats are displayed, both full-size and as models. In summer some twenty rigged traditional boats lie on the slipway and in the harbor. The exhibition covers seafaring, boats and hot-bulb engines. The island is a nature reserve with walking trails, barbecue sites and grazing cattle in summer, and every July the Bassholmen Dag is celebrated with activities in the harbor.
