About the museum
The Spårvägsmuseet (Tramway Museum) was founded in 1920 by Captain Ernst Hjortzberg and has since been located at several different sites in Stockholm. The museum tells the story of the development of public transport in the capital by water, road and rail, and is run by SL, the Region Stockholm public transport authority.
Today the museum is in the converted Gasverket (Gasworks) in Hjorthagen, part of Norra Djurgårdsstaden. The building has been rebuilt to hold exhibitions, a café, a shop and a lecture hall.
The exhibitions show 13 vehicles, from horse-drawn carriages and boats to motor and electric traffic, together with uniforms, tickets, advertising and the art in the metro. On the top floor a chronological tour follows the history of public transport from rowing boats and horse-drawn traffic to the opportunities and challenges of the future. In the café a mini metro train runs past.
