About the museum

Strömbacka bruk (Strömbacka ironworks) received its privileges in 1742, and the first bar-iron hammer was completed in 1753. In the later part of the 18th century the works grew into three hammer forges, where iron was forged by the German method. In 1827 the works was bought by Per Adolf Tamm, who introduced Walloon forging at the upper hammer, and in 1876 Strömbacka was absorbed into Iggesunds bruk. At its peak, in the 1880s, around 350 people were registered at the works.

During the 20th century forging was concentrated entirely in the upper hammer. Lancashire forging was reintroduced in 1944, and Walloon forging continued in parallel until 1947, which makes Strömbacka the last Walloon forge in operation in the world. Lancashire forging continued until 1953, when operations ceased. The works then declined for a few decades, until its historical values were noticed and several restorations were carried out.

The forge got its present appearance around 1930 and has been a listed building (byggnadsminne) since 1990. It has, among other things, a Walloon hearth, a reheating furnace (räckvällugn), three Lancashire hearths, a blowing machine, a mumbling hammer (mumblingshammare) and two air hammers, and the power transmission with water wheels, turbines and tub turbines is preserved. Next to it lies a whole works environment with a works street, manor house, chapel, offices and school. The site is managed by Stiftelsen Hudiksvalls Bruksminnen (Hudiksvall Works Heritage Foundation).
