About the museum
The main building of Svindersvik was built around 1740 for Claes and Anna Johanna Grill to designs by Carl Hårleman, one of the leading architects of the time. Claes Grill was an influential financier and later became director of the Swedish East India Company. The family lived in Stockholm during the winter half-year and spent their summers here, reached by rowing boat.
In 1780 the estate was sold to Catharina Charlotta De Geer. After several changes of ownership, the silk manufacturer Knut August Almgren bought it in 1863. The Almgren family owned Svindersvik until 1949, when the property was transferred to Nordiska museet. The summer residence has never been rebuilt and is today counted as one of Sweden’s best-preserved rococo complexes. In March 2024 the County Administrative Board (länsstyrelsen) decided to designate Svindersvik as a listed building (byggnadsminne).
The main building is symmetrically planned in the French fashion and has tiled stoves and silk-upholstered furniture from the 18th century. In the largest reception room the walls are covered with Chinese paper wallpapers with flower and bird motifs, and in the cabinet the ceiling is painted as a summer sky. Next to it is a separate kitchen wing, and down by the water is the Pavilion from the 1780s, with a banqueting hall five metres high. The garden is laid out in the French style, with some sixty fruit trees in straight rows.

Stools can be borrowed. There is no electricity in the buildings, so it can be dark indoors on an overcast day.
