About the museum
The exhibition on Handöl's history is located in the same building as Hanriis Café, a converted old sawmill near the former soapstone quarry and the factory in Handöl. The cultural house was started to be an asset for tourism in western Jämtland and is owned by Stiftelsen Handöls kulturhus (the Handöl Cultural House Foundation), which was formed by Åre Municipality, Handöls Täljsten AB and Jämtlands läns museum (Jämtland County Museum). The exhibition was produced by Jämtlands läns museum.
Handöl is a small mountain village where the Handölan river flows into Lake Ånnsjön. The village is known for its soapstone factory, which went bankrupt in 2013 after several hundred years of quarrying, and for the Carolean soldiers: in the middle of winter 1719 the village received hundreds of frostbitten soldiers after Armfeldt's march over the border mountains. About 600 of them lie buried in Handöl's soil, while three thousand remained on the mountain.
The exhibition tells that story and the story of the soapstone, which is probably the reason the village came into being. The café and shop in the house have been run by Anita Dalanes and Magnhild Larsson since the summer of 1999.
