About the museum
Tossögården was built in the late 19th century as workers’ housing for the neighbouring Tossö sawmill and later the Husåsågen (Husåsa sawmill). The buildings are the only ones that remind visitors of the important sawmill period on Tossön; of the sawmill’s own buildings only foundations remain. On the farm there is a main building with four flats, an outbuilding range, an earth cellar and an outhouse.
The Tossögården association was formed in 1994 to preserve the workers’ housing. After restoration the farm was declared a listed building in 1999. Åre Municipality owns the land and buildings, and the association has the right of use of the area.
Today Tossögården is a working-life museum where old documents, photographs and working objects bring Järpen’s industrial history to life. Old garden cultivation has been recreated in terraces with plants from crofts and farms around Järpen.
