About the museum

Vävskedsmuseet (the Weaving Reed Museum) opened during the spring market in May 2008, then in a basement premises in the Medborgarhuset in Markaryd. Today the museum is in the Kulturhuset (Culture House) at Kungsgatan 1, together with a library, an art hall and the Idrottsmuseet (Sports Museum).

Vävskedar (weaving reeds) are the thin slats in the loom through which the warp threads are threaded. Production in Markaryd got under way in the latter part of the 18th century, and in the second half of the 19th century reed-making was the district's main source of income. Reed makers travelled round the farms with their tools. Production became industrial about a hundred years ago, and the last company, AB Vävskedsfabriken i Markaryd (the Markaryd Weaving Reed Factory), closed in 2004.

The exhibition shows, among other things, an old loom and wooden reeds, including one from the time when production was industrialised, as well as pictures of people who worked in the local reed industry. At the opening in 2008 there was also an opportunity to watch films and listen to lectures.
