About the museum
The collections have their origins in 1860, when the soldier John Åkesson Peto found a flint dagger while cultivating a field at Slättaröd, west of Bjärnum. His son Atto Peto, a bookbinder, began to look after the old things of the district and in 1881 wrote to the national antiquarian (riksantikvarien) when the parish's medieval church was about to be demolished. On his initiative, the Norra Åkarp municipal local heritage committee (hembygdsnämnd) was formed in 1923, and he served as its chairman and treasurer until his death in 1948.
The heritage park was built up with relocated buildings. The malt kiln came in 1947, the old school from 1869 was moved here in 1949 and Snickar Ivar's house in 1956. The park also contains a skvaltkvarn (a simple water mill), Stavshultstugan, a reconstructed backstuga (small cottage) and the Bergstrand house from 1998. The agricultural museum was built in 1989. The main building was begun in 1973 and inaugurated in 1975, and in 1974 Bjärnums fornminnesförening (ancient monuments association) was entrusted with running the museum.
A three-storey extension was inaugurated about ten years after the question was raised in 1993, and there the technology is shown on the basement level. In 2010 a reconstruction of part of the old medieval church was inaugurated in the museum.
