About the museum
The museum is housed in Ljungbergs magasin (Ljungberg storehouse) in the Skillingaryd homestead park. The building originally stood at Källeliden at the junction with Brunnsgatan, where A. Ljungberg started his carriage-making business. It was used until the mid-1900s as a painting workshop and storehouse, with a saddlery and other manufacturing on the upper floor. The storehouse was saved from demolition in the 1970s, moved to the homestead park in 1982–1983 and opened on 6 June 1983.
On the first floor, carriages and sledges made in the area are shown, together with a history of carriage-making and the village smithies. On the second floor is a crafts museum with small stalls for, among other things, saddlery, upholstery, tanning, shoe and slipper making, carpentry, painting, coppersmithing and tailoring. The museum shows how the crafts of the time laid the foundations for the workshop and furniture industry in the region.
In 2022, Tofteryd-Hagshult hembygdsförening and Östbo Historiska sällskap added documentation on the region's industrial history to the carriage museum, an exhibition of about fifty signs on how carriage-making developed in the 1700s and 1800s, and more carriages from barns and outbuildings in the area. The renovated carriage museum was opened on Swedish National Day in 2022.
