About the museum
Gamla Bankgården (the Old Bank House) in Vrigstad was inaugurated on 12 November 2003, when the former bank museum was supplemented with the Dahl apartment (Dahlska lägenheten). Here is Sweden's only bank museum in its original location. The building housed Vrigstads sparbank (Vrigstad Savings Bank), and the museum shows the bank's premises and fittings, as well as a collection of coins and banknotes.
On the upper floor visitors can look round a flat from the late 1800s that belonged to the crown bailiff (kronolänsman) and bank treasurer Alfred Dahl. Since 2007 there is also a machine museum, Från gåspenna till dator (From Quill Pen to Computer), and a large collection of piggy banks in various shapes.
In 2022 a new permanent exhibition was inaugurated, Vrigstadentreprenörer – hur Vrigstad blev Vrigstad (Vrigstad Entrepreneurs – How Vrigstad Became Vrigstad), which shows how the efforts of individual people have shaped the community. The facility is owned and run by Stiftelsen Gamla Bankgården (the Gamla Bankgården Foundation), with representatives of Vrigstads hembygdsförening (Vrigstad Local Heritage Society), Vrigstads samhällsförening (Vrigstad Community Association) and Sparbanksstiftelsen Alfa (the Alfa Savings Bank Foundation), on a voluntary basis with locally trained guides.
