About the museum
Miliseum is located within the military training area in Skillingaryd, often called Slätten (the Plain). Allotted soldiers (indelta soldater) trained there as early as the 1600s, and military activity continues to this day. Skillingaryds läger (Skillingaryd camp), where activity began in the 1680s, has been a state-protected building since 1993 and is counted as the country's best-preserved old training ground.
The museum describes itself as the region's responsibility museum (ansvarsmuseum) for military history. The exhibitions follow the allotted soldiers and their families through Swedish history, at home on the soldier's croft (soldattorp) and in the field, and show the activities and field-engineering techniques of the engineer troops and their predecessors. Visitors can also learn about the history of the firing range and see examples of cannons and terrain vehicles used by the artillery.
Miliseum is part of the network Sveriges Militärhistoriska Arv (Sweden's Military Historical Heritage), which consists of 27 state and state-supported museums. The museum is run by Vaggeryds kommun (Vaggeryd Municipality).
