About the museum
The Varvshistoriska föreningen i Göteborg (Shipyard History Association of Gothenburg) is a non-profit voluntary association formed in 1986. It is open to all who are interested in the history of the shipyards in Gothenburg, and at its last report it had just over 400 members. The association’s purpose is to preserve and spread knowledge of the significance of the shipyards and their employees.
The work is based on an extensive archive of photographs, handbooks, ship specifications and newspapers from the big yards in the city, including Arendal, Eriksberg, Göteborgs Mekaniska Verkstad, Lindholmen, Götaverken and Lundby. The photographs are scanned and the documentation is registered progressively. The association also interviews former shipyard employees, and the stories are published in book form or as films. Members receive the annual publication Varv.
The association’s premises on Lindholmen house an exhibition with photographs and texts from the large yards, plus models and tools from the shipbuilding industry. The exhibition and the office can be visited by arrangement. In the long term the association wants to create a shipyard and industrial heritage centre in Gothenburg where the archive would be accessible to the public.
