About the museum
Vike is a North Gutnish beach farm in Boge on Gotland’s east coast. The farm is mentioned in written sources from 1614 and in a revision book from 1653, but it must have existed long before the 17th century. The present farm, which is today a museum farm, was built in 1828–1833 as a beach farm where fishing was the main livelihood, alongside forestry, a few animals, meadow and arable land. It is an unaltered example of self-sufficiency in the 19th century and has never had a tractor. Farming ceased in 1950, when the last owners died.
The farm was bought in 1952 by Lars-Gunnar and Marie Marthe Romell, who established a foundation that still manages it. The buildings have been listed since 1964. The main house is a stone pair-cottage (parstuga), and the main farmyard has a bulhus range with an agtak roof, a stable, a barn and a threshing gallery (tröskvandring). The garden contains Gotland hops, and the meadow (änge) slopes down to a newly restored beach shed with a photo exhibition about life by the water.
Work at the farm is done voluntarily by volunteers. The outdoor area is always open to visitors, and in summer open days with fika (coffee and cake) and guided viewings are held.
