About the museum
Slite sjöfartsmuseum (Slite Maritime Museum) was started in 1998 as its own association in close cooperation with Boge-Othems hembygdsförening (Boge-Othem Local Heritage Society). Its purpose is to collect, preserve and show objects and stories that illuminate Gotland’s seafaring history, and the museum is run by enthusiasts who want to show all the work that men, women and ships have done to keep society going. Today the museum is a section within Slite-Othem-Boge hembygdsförening.
In the museum premises there is a wheelhouse and a navigation cabin under construction, a radar installation, ship models, life-saving equipment from vessels connected with Slite, a library and a marine art exhibition. On the ground floor old engines are being restored, for example a Vänern, a Lister from the 1950s, a Göta and a Solo. Visitors may touch the objects and ask questions of the museum’s experts.
Outdoors there is a working slipway that can handle loads of up to 30 tonnes. The members have also built a monument to the refugee flow from the Baltic during the final phase of the Second World War, made from stones from the old Apotekskajen (Pharmacy Quay) in Slite.
