About the museum
Norrlanda fornstuga is a local heritage museum created by the Gotland poet Gustaf Larsson, his brother John Larsson and their father Johan Larsson. The first building, Linastugan, was moved here as early as 1926. Over time more buildings have been moved here, and some have been reconstructed on site.
The site has twelve buildings, including timber houses in skiftesverk (a timber-frame construction) with implements and tools from an 18th-century Gotland farm. The barn from the 17th century is one of the island’s oldest preserved bulhus. There are also culturally historical stones here, including sword-sharpening stones, and a well from the Middle Ages. The fornstuga is described as an everyday museum that shows what daily life could look like on a Gotland farm.
Since 1956 the fornstuga has been run by a non-profit foundation. It also includes a water mill at Djupå, a beach shed and a boat shed at Hammars fishing village, and a windmill at Mangsarve.
