About the museum
Vikstenstorpet, also called Ängratörn, is the croft of the writer Albert Viksten by Lake Ängratörn in Ljusdal Municipality in Hälsingland. The croft was built in 1863 by a Norwegian forest worker in the valley of Skrälldalen and was later owned by the crofter August Palm and his wife Gölin. Friends and fellow writers bought the croft and gave it to Albert Viksten as a fiftieth-birthday present in 1939.
The place reminded Viksten of his childhood home in Graninge, and here he found peace and inspiration for his writing. The croft also became a gathering place for friends, among them Vilhelm Moberg, Ivar Lo-Johansson, Ragnar Holmström, Gustav Hedenvind-Eriksson and Ivan Oljelund, and for artists who drew inspiration here. Viksten described the croft and the district in the book Mitt Paradis (My Paradise) from 1959. Next to the croft stands his writing cabin, a smithy that he moved here from his home farm Kronbacka in Färila.
After Viksten's death in 1969 the heirs gave the croft to Ljusdal Municipality. The municipality owns it, and since 2023 the Albert Viksten Sällskapet (Albert Viksten Society) has looked after the croft under a usufruct agreement. Between the shore and the croft a flower meadow spreads out, as Viksten described several times in his diaries.
