About the museum
The Kleines Hausmuseum is located in the former Dominican convent of St. Katharinental near Diessenhofen, whose convent church was built from 1732 to 1734 by the Vorarlberg master builder Johann Michael Beer as an outstanding work of South German Baroque. The church and monastery complex belong to the canton of Thurgau; the Amt für Denkmalpflege looks after the church and the house museum.
The museum was set up in 1982 after the restoration of the monastery was completed, and it reopened in September 2015 after a gentle renovation. Surviving pieces document the building history of the monastery and its importance as a spiritual center on the Upper Rhine, both in the era of mysticism and during the monastic reforms of the 18th century. On display are, among other things, paintings, sculptures, photographs, books and building materials.
During the supervised opening hours, the convent church, the Einsiedlerkapelle (Hermit Chapel) and the house museum can be visited under expert guidance, following in the footsteps of the nuns. The monastery grounds also house the Schaudepot St. Katharinental of the Historisches Museum Thurgau, which is a separate visitor site with its own booking.
