About the museum
From the 17th to the 19th century, the de Latour family was one of the most influential families in the Surselva. Several of its members served as officers in foreign armies, above all in France. The best known, Caspar Theodosius de Latour (1782–1855), rose to the rank of general and led the papal troops in northern Italy. For roughly four centuries, family members also held political offices in Brigels and in the rest of Graubünden.
Casper de Latour-Scarpatetti (1862–1949) had the Casa Latour built in the village center of Brigels between 1895 and 1898 as an imposing stone house with a tower above the entrance. In his will he stipulated that the cultural heritage and the family archive were to remain intact as an undivided inheritance.
At the suggestion of his granddaughter Rita Theus-Bieler and her husband Valentin Theus-Bieler, the descendants set up a small family archive with a museum in the house. It displays dress uniforms and swords that the family's officers wore around 1780/90 in the court service of the French kings, numerous portraits, and display cases with toys, books, awards and other keepsakes. The collection can be visited on guided tours, which must be reserved in advance.
