About the museum
The Museum Engiadinais opened in 1906, making it one of the oldest museums in Graubünden. The collector and brewer Riet Campell from Susch had spent his lifetime gathering culturally and historically valuable interiors from five centuries in order to save them from the sell-off of the homeland and make them accessible to the public. Since 1920 the museum has been a foundation under the supervision of the canton of Graubünden.
The architect Nikolaus Hartmann built a custom-made building for it that matches the ideal image of an Engadine house, both then and now. He faithfully took up many elements of local architecture while also using the most modern building technology. The house quickly became a showpiece of the heritage protection movement and a tourist attraction; collection and building still form a total work of art today.
At its heart are the 21 exhibition rooms with panelled parlours from the Engadine and neighbouring regions, a state hall from the Valtellina, a stately kitchen and a bedchamber. There are also displays of selected holdings from Riet Campell's collection, such as chests, caskets, clocks, jewellery and textiles. The E-Guide tells the story of the rooms; there are deliberately no wall texts.
