About the museum
The Segantini Museum in St. Moritz was ceremonially opened in 1908, nine years after the death of the painter Giovanni Segantini. The initiator was the St. Moritz physician Oskar Bernhard, a friend and patron of the artist. The architect Nicolaus Hartmann took his inspiration from the pavilion that Segantini had designed for his Engadine Panorama at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition. The central building with its massive dome stands on the steep slope above Lake St. Moritz and feels like a walk-in monument.
At first the museum could only show loans. From 1911, with a public collection and the support of the Gottfried Keller Foundation, it succeeded in acquiring parts of the Alpine triptych "Werden – Sein – Vergehen" (Becoming – Being – Passing) and reuniting them. It remains the museum's main attraction to this day. In 2001 the paintings and drawings of the Otto Fischbacher / Giovanni Segantini Foundation came to the museum on deposit. Today the holdings comprise 37 paintings and 26 drawings.
The building was extended in 1981 with an exhibition room, comprehensively renovated in 1998/99 for the 100th anniversary of the artist's death, and fitted with a lift and wheelchair-accessible access. In 2019 it was renewed again, creating a small visitors' café, a multi-purpose room and storerooms.
