About the museum

The building in a former boys' school next to the city park was opened in 1951 as the Museum Oskar Reinhart and was then Switzerland's first private museum. Winterthur collector and patron Oskar Reinhart (1885–1965) had built a large art collection during his lifetime. After the turn of the century, he deliberately acquired German and Austrian art in addition to Swiss works.

The collection is particularly strong in Early Romanticism and Realism; these groups are permanently displayed. In addition are Dutch masters of the Golden Age from the Jakob Briner Foundation as well as a large number of portrait miniatures from the Briner and Kern collections, shown in changing exhibitions. Reinhart's villa with earlier masters and French Impressionists is held by the federal government as "Sammlung Oskar Reinhart «Am Römerholz»" (its own museum).

Since 2017, the former Museum Oskar Reinhart has worked operationally with the Kunstmuseum Winterthur; both houses appear jointly with Villa Flora under the Kunst Museum Winterthur umbrella brand. In March 2025, the building reopened with newly arranged collection displays.
