About the museum
The Lindengut is a stately residence with a park in the Feld district of Flawil. The property can be documented from around 1804, when it belonged to the family of carters named Lenggenhager; the house was probably built towards the end of the 18th century. Until 1882 the estate was called “Feldegg”. The weaving mill owner Huldreich Ottiker then acquired it, developed it into a stately country estate, and had the park laid out with native and exotic plants, fountains and a garden house. The name “Lindengut” probably also comes from him.
The Schiess family and their son Rolf later lived in the house. For the 125th anniversary of Habis Textil AG, the company gave the property in 1983 to the newly founded Stiftung Lindengut, so that a local history museum and a meeting place could be established here. As early as 1980, history-minded residents had founded the Verein Ortsmuseum Flawil and begun collecting relics of the village.
After the renovation of the house and grounds, members of the association set up the museum through years of manual work; it opened on 9 September 1989. The exhibition shows local history with a focus on the textile and embroidery trades, as well as crafts, club life and domestic culture. All staff are volunteers.
