About the museum
The Ortsmuseum Wängi is housed in the Adlerscheune (Adler barn) on Dorfstrasse and is run by the Stiftung Ortsmuseum Wängi foundation, whose board of trustees includes representatives of the municipality and the Protestant church. It was opened in the Adlerscheune on November 9, 1986. Over three floors, it displays historical and folk-culture objects from the history of the municipality.
The permanent exhibition covers everyday culture, household, living, transport, crafts, agriculture and the textile industry. The main areas are the history of Wängi, with period documents up to the present day, agricultural equipment and machinery, and evidence of craft skills. A selection of around one hundred photographs of surviving farmhouses shows how important agriculture was for the municipality, and a separate section is devoted to flax processing, from pulling to weaving.
Another focus is the work of the draftsman and choir director Johann Alphons Berkmüller (1802–1879), whose small-format drawings and watercolors of houses, streets and landscapes follow the style of the Swiss Little Masters. Under the museum’s patronage, seven “Wängenerhefte” (Wängen booklets) on local history have been published so far; they are available on site.
