About the museum
Behind the museum stands the Uniun Cristallina, a club that since 1959 has brought together people interested in mineralogy and related fields in Disentis/Mustér. It organizes meetings, courses, lectures and excursions, and every year on the first weekend of August the Disentiser Mineralienbörse, where only Swiss minerals may be shown. Much of the proceeds from the fair go toward buying minerals for the club's own collection.
The aim of the collection is to represent the minerals found in the Bündner Oberland with representative specimens; it grows through purchases, donations from patrons and loans. Since 2004 it has been on public display in the Mineralienmuseum Cristallina in the basement of the Turnhalle Cons.
In around 20 display cases, the museum shows about 600 specimens that give an overview of the mineral deposits of the Surselva, which is regarded as the richest mineral region in Switzerland. Alongside the club collection, selected crystals from private collections of local crystal hunters are on display; this section was completely renewed in December 2024 with new finds. A specially acquired microscope makes even tiny minerals visible, and museum staff help identify stones that visitors bring along.
