About the museum
The Jost-Sigristen-Haus is an impressive log building of larch wood in the historic village center of Ernen. The beam in the parlor bears the inscription 1581; three Giltstein (soapstone) stoves in the house date from the same year. Soon afterward the wooden house was extended with a masonry annex with painted façade and the year 1601.
In 1771 and 1772 the house received its furnishings, most of which survive today, including the paneled parlor and a cupboard. The client was Jakob Valentin Sigristen (1733–1808), a typical representative of the landvogt patriciate, who is considered the last governor of the old Valais before the French invasion.
The museum on the first floor opened in 1995 and shows how Sigristen lived and worked. Highlights include the painted ceiling, the paintings in the Gelbe Stube (Yellow Parlor) and the three Giltstein stoves. The museum is run by the association Verein Heimatmuseum und Kulturpflege Ernen (Ernen Local History and Heritage Association).
