About the museum
The museum is housed in the Curvanera house, which belongs to the group of houses called “Curt” by the Nossadonna church in Savognin. The Curt was once a farm of the Diocese of Chur and at times served the prince-bishops as a summer residence; some of the old manorial houses survive to this day. Other relics left the village: Gothic paneled rooms from Savognin were sold for little money in the past and can today be seen in the Engadiner Museum in St. Moritz and the Landesmuseum (Swiss National Museum) in Zurich.
At the suggestion of Romano Plaz, the municipality of Savognin bought the house in 1979. The foundation “Museum Curvanera”, set up for this purpose, aimed to create a regional museum for the valley that establishes a vivid link to the everyday life of the ancestors; the museum opened in 1982. Since 2019 a newly constituted foundation board has run the house.
The building is preserved as an originally furnished Oberhalbstein farmhouse with a living section, an outbuilding and a wood workshop. On display are household items, agricultural equipment, tools and old means of transport that tell of the sparse but hopeful life in the valley. The living rooms include the Stube (parlor), kitchen, hallway and sleeping chamber. Each year a new temporary exhibition complements the permanent exhibition, and in front of the house a garden of traditional medicinal herbs is growing.
