About the museum
On the Alp Taspegn above Zillis, base metals were mined between the 17th and 19th centuries, including silver-bearing ores. The association Erzminen Hinterrhein, which has cared for the historical mining sites in Schams and the Ferrera Valley since 2009, runs a small museum at about 2,200 meters above sea level, which it describes as probably the highest-situated museum in Switzerland.
The museum is part of the excursion to the silver mines: after a jeep ride from Zillis up to the alp, participants learn there how base metal mining was organized at this altitude and what difficulties the miners faced. A short hike then leads to the entrance of the mine, where the tunnels are explored. Many mining attempts failed – the visit also tells of these.
Members of the association maintain the site in work sessions; in 2023 a new bridge was built on Taspegn.
