About the museum

The Transitorisches Museum zu Pfyn is an art and collection project by the artists Alex Meszmer and Reto Müller. In 2006 they founded the Zeitgarten as a collection and communication point for the history and the stories of Pfyn, and in 2007 they added the museum with a celebration in the Trotte. The house sees itself as a living, constantly changing museum whose collection is based on digital archives with around 5,000 photos, interviews, texts and audio recordings.

The permanent exhibition “Wie wir leben” (How We Live) in the Trotte was created in 2008 with the Amt für Archäologie des Kantons Thurgau (Thurgau Office of Archaeology) and was redesigned in 2017; it builds on the primary school’s earlier pile-dwelling museum, which existed from 1945 to 1989. It tells about 6,000 years of local history: the Neolithic village of Pfyn-Breitenloo, which was excavated in 1944 with interned Polish soldiers and gave the Pfyn culture its name; the Roman period at the late Roman fort Ad Fines; and life from the 19th to the 21st century.

The Trotte, the former tithe barn of Pfyn Castle, incorporates parts of the Roman fort wall; alongside the museum, the municipal hall, school library, kindergarten and parish hall are housed here. The museum also includes a station trail with ten boards through the Städtli. Finds from the Roman period and from Pfyn-Breitenloo are shown in this exhibition.
